Things are Heating Up in SLP’s Heat Test Chamber

One of the most critical considerations when designing lighting fixtures is heat management. Careful thought must be applied throughout the entire design phase to ensure a light fixture will not succumb to an early, heat-related death. The LED chips, drivers and/or lighting components must not exceed their maximum rated temperatures from operation of the light fixture.

A valuable tool that the SLP engineers use to validate thermal performance is our dedicated heat test chamber. Inside the chamber, thermocouples are strategically applied at key locations both internal and external to the fixture being tested. Testing can be performed at 25°C (77°F) as well as higher ambients like 50°C (122°F) or even 65°C (149°F), depending on the fixture’s application. This allows us to determine the maximum wattages that can be applied to the fixture to keep it in the required thermal operating range. Heat test reports are generated from the data acquired during these in-house tests. These tests also provide valuable assurance prior to sending a fixture out for UL certification. Another typical usage of our heat test chamber is to provide a service to our customers, if they have a specific target lumen/wattage LED light engine they are considering, the SLP engineers can mock it up, and perform thermal testing to validate their design intent. SLP’s Heat Test Chamber is a valuable asset that plays a vital role in our success!
