How to Commemorate Memorial Day
While we all recognize Memorial Day as the unofficial start of summer, we have to remember what the day is really about: Memorial Day is a chance to honor those who gave their all for our country. Take some time this weekend to remember, reflect and express your gratitude. Here are some ways you can do so:
-
Attend a ceremony. Many towns hold Memorial Day parades and ceremonies. These events often feature speeches by veterans or public officials, as well as musical tributes.
-
Visit a cemetery. Many people visit the graves of fallen soldiers on Memorial Day. This is a time to reflect on their sacrifice and to honor their memory. You can also volunteer to place flags on the graves of veterans at a local cemetery.
-
Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance. At 3:00 pm local time on Memorial Day, a nationwide moment of silence is held to remember the fallen. You can participate by pausing for one minute wherever you are.
-
Fly the flag at half-staff. The American flag should be flown at half-staff from dawn until noon on Memorial Day. This is a sign of respect for those who have died in service to our country.
-
Donate to a veterans organization. There are many organizations that support veterans and their families. Consider making a donation to one of these organizations on Memorial Day.
-
Learn about the history of Memorial Day. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and was established to honor the soldiers who died in the Civil War. Take some time to learn about the history of the holiday and the sacrifices that have been made by our nation’s veterans.
-
Thank a veteran. If you know a veteran, take the time to thank them for their service. You can also thank a veteran by volunteering your time at a veterans organization or by donating to a veterans charity.
